The discovery that Revolver Ocelot was an agent for the Patriots, and that Raiden was being manipulated by them as well, forced Solidus's back to the wall.

He crashed Arsenal Gear into New York City's Federal Hall in an effort to strike at the Patriots.

Having lost GW, Solidus Snake felt that his final lead on the Patriots' identities lied inside the nanomachines within Raiden's brain and the pattern of nerves they created, and faced Raiden in man-to-man combat, resulting in his own death.
