Symbols representing chemical elements. Devised by Berzelius in 1814. Up to now, over 110 elements have been discovered, including artificial elements, and those up to element number 111 have been given an element symbol consisting of one to two letters. The number of protons in an atomic nucleus is called the atomic number, and when chemical elements are arranged according to their atomic number, they form the following sequence: hydrogen, helium, lithium, beryllium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, neon...
