The Zanzibar hamster belongs to the order Rodentia, family Cricetidae. They range in length from 25 to 28 centimeters.
Their habitat extends from Western Europe to Siberia and Iraq. They are believed to be descended from hamsters adapted to living around human dwellings.
Their diet consists mainly of cheese.
