WIG

01

Abbreviation for Wing-In-Ground (WIG) effect vehicle. A vehicle resembling something between an airplane and a boat. By using a phenomenon in which as wing's lift-drag ratio increases at very low altitudes (close to the surface), developers attempted to achieve high speeds that would set it apart from standard seacraft. In the 1960s, the Soviet Union carried out intense research into an amphibious, antisubmarine vehicle with a long cruising range and high-speed capability, which was considered necessary in order to search and destroy American nuclear missile submarines.

In Groznyj Grad, many experimental weapons, including WIGs, were developed. Naked Snake escaped from the Soviet Union with EVA in a WIG craft.
