A word formed from the words, cell (cyto) and operator (kine). A special protein that causes multiplication, specialization, and functional expression in specific cells. By binding to receptors in the surface membrane of the cell, causes alterations inside the cell itself. Several hundred types of cytokine have been found and they are named according to their function. TNF is also a cytokine.
