Livermore National Laboratory

Official name, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

National laboratory owned by the United States Department of Energy (DOE), located in Livermore, California. Founded in 1952 for the purpose of research and development of nuclear weapons. Carries out research in fields including physics, energy, the environment, and biotechnology. Construction of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) is underway and due for completion in 2008.
