Normandy Landings
01
Refers to "Operation Overlord" which took place on June 6, 1944 during the Second World War. It was the largest-ever landing operation, during which 3 million Allied soldiers advanced onto the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, France, which was occupied by Nazi Germany. The day on which the operation was executed was called D-Day.
Airborne troops crossed the Straits of Dover at night, and the landing operation was carried out in the early morning using parachutes. This was followed by the landing of mechanized infantry units from landing craft, supported by aerial bombing and naval bombardment. Germany resisted with defensive fortifications called the "Atlantic Wall", but surrendered roughly two months later. Paris was liberated on August 25. Since this operation, a large-scale landing operation of this caliber has not been carried out anywhere in the world.
