Parachute
01
An umbrella-like device that opens up to slow the speed of descent while falling. The word parachute derives from the Latin root "para", meaning "against" or "counter", and "chute", the French word for "fall". Similar devices are used on the Space Shuttle and on some fighter planes to reduce speed upon landing, but in their case it is known as a drag chute. The idea behind the parachute is believed to have been one of Leonardo da Vinci's 15th-century sketches. US Army Captain Albert Berry is credited with the world's first parachute jump from a moving aircraft in 1912.
Naked Snake unofficially performed the world's first high-altitude low-opening (HALO) parachute jump over Pakistan on August 24, 1964. His parachute bore the insignia of the FOX Unit. Solid Snake also used a parachute when descending from the top of a building in Outer Heaven.
